Glick Company Wins National Preservation Award for Briarwood of Lexington Rehabilitation

Sep 24, 2026

INDIANAPOLIS, September 24, 2026 – Briarwood of Lexington Apartments has received national recognition from the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition (AHTCC) for preserving 204 affordable apartment homes for seniors and people with disabilities. The property, owned and managed by the Indianapolis-based Gene B. Glick Company, received the 2026 AHTCC Recognition of Housing Tax Credit Excellence in the HUD Preservation category.

Presented annually for 32 years, the recognition honors affordable housing developments and organizations that have demonstrated impactful use of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit) program by strengthening communities, improving resident opportunities, and supporting economies across the country.

“As the affordability crisis grows, the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit has become increasingly essential to providing families with safe, stable housing near jobs, education, health care and other community resources,” said AHTCC CEO Emily Cadik. “Each winner of the 2026 Recognition of Housing Tax Credit Excellence has made a lasting impact in the communities they serve and for the families who now have an affordable place to call home.”

Built by the Glick Company in 1979, Briarwood of Lexington provides affordable housing in an area where options for seniors and people with disabilities are limited, making its preservation especially valuable as local rents continue to rise. The $9.5 million renovation—made possible by public-private partnerships and Housing Credits—included upgraded kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, air conditioning, and more, representing an investment of more than $45,000 per unit. Additionally, the broader apartment community received a full building repaint, upgraded elevators, new building entry doors with ADA push button operators, enhanced landscaping, and more.

"Preserving existing affordable housing through acquisition and rehabilitation is one of the most effective tools for slowing the erosion of our nation’s affordable housing supply," said David Barrett, chairman, president, and CEO of the Glick Company. "At Glick, we invest in rehabilitating communities like Briarwood to strengthen the quality of life for current residents while preserving affordable housing for the generations to come, and we are honored to be recognized for this important work.”

The Housing Credit is the nation’s primary tool to create and preserve affordable rental housing. In the 40 years since its inception in 1986, the Housing Credit has financed more than four million affordable homes for 9.6 million low-income households, including formerly homeless individuals and families, people with disabilities, veterans of the armed forces, and senior citizens. CREA, LLC's equity investment in Briarwood of Lexington helped leverage the Housing Credits to support the community's long-term sustainability.

“At CREA, our work is guided by the simple belief that opportunity starts with a safe place to call home,” said CREA CEO Tony Bertoldi. “The Glick Company’s preservation of Briarwood of Lexington stands as a model of what strong community partnership can achieve when there’s a shared goal of helping people and communities move forward with stability, dignity, and opportunity.”

In addition to the partnership with CREA, this rehabilitation was made possible through an allocation of Tax-Exempt Bonds in conjunction with 4% Housing Credits from Kentucky Housing Corporation, a grant from Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s Affordable Housing Fund, project support from New Hope Consulting, construction by CRG Residential, construction lending by Fifth Third Bank, and permanent lending by Merchants Capital.
