Q: What is your title at the Gene B. Glick Company?
A: Currently, I am the reporting and analytics manager at Glick. Previously, I worked in applications services as an administrator and then a senior administrator.

Q: How long have you been with the company?
A: I have been with Glick eight years.

Q: How did you make your way into this industry?
A: I started out many years ago as a leasing agent with a different company and I held a variety of property management positions. I was away from the industry for several years before joining Glick.

Q: What training/education/background did you bring with you?
A: I have a bachelor’s degree in computer technology from Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis.

Q: How do you describe your role to friends and family?
A: I like to say that I am the pilot of the Millennium Falcon. The brief description I give most often is that I’m “the data guy.”

Q: What do you do in your role?
A: The primary focus of my role is business intelligence. I also am involved in the creation and maintenance of Yardi custom reports and letters, ad hoc reporting and data analysis, database troubleshooting and error correction, technology partner data integration, and support ticket system administration. In addition, I always serve as a resource for the applications services team.

Q: Why is the work you do at Glick important?
A: In this fast-paced world, it’s important to have technical resources available to be able to respond quickly to immediate needs. My role allows us to be agile when responding to software issues and errors. I retrieve the necessary data to make informed decisions and I create processes when out-of-the-box solutions are not available or don’t quite fit.

Q: Bringing business intelligence to Glick has been a labor of love for you. Tell us about your involvement with the project and how you feel seeing it come to fruition.
A: One of my primary roles in this project has been to act as an intermediary between Glick, our integrated partners that feed data in to the system, and our business intelligence development partner. This project required quite a bit of work on the technical side, from writing the code to extracting the necessary enterprise software system data to assisting with the design of the reporting tool. This project has been a professional goal of mine for many years, so it is very exciting and satisfying that we are now at the point where the vision is a reality. Data literacy is so important to all businesses. As we look to the future, Glick’s first steps into business intelligence will create a solid foundation to leverage machine learning, predictive analytics and artificial intelligence.

Q: What part(s) of your job do you like the most?
A: Quite often, this job is simultaneously creative and analytical. I also regularly have the chance to provide support or assistance to my colleagues. It’s a good day for me when I can help make someone’s day a little better.

Q: What would surprise people about your role and the work that you do?
A: Spending hours and hours writing code is actually fun!

Q: What has surprised you the most about working at Glick?
A: When I first started, I was surprised by the number of long-term team members at Glick and the number of team members with decades of tenure. I’ve worked in industries where two or three years was considered long term.

Q: Where are you from originally?
A: I was born in Evanston, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. Most of my adult life has been in Indianapolis.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I like road trips, hiking, reading, photography, and relaxing at home with my wife and cats.

Q: What would surprise Glick team members about you?
A: I am a skilled canoeist. I spent five summers as a canoe adventure guide in northern Minnesota and Canada as a younger man. I still enjoy a day on the water when the weather is nice.

Q: If you won the lottery and didn’t have to worry about money, how would you fill your time (e.g., dream job, hobbies, causes)?
A: I’ve had a lifelong passion for motorsports and spent a couple of seasons driving racing cars many years ago. Some of the lottery money would go toward racing sports cars around the world, like Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Corvette, or maybe all the above. I would help to ensure animal welfare agencies are well-funded. I would put the money to work to bring together intelligent, creative and passionate members of the public and private sectors with the goal to end food and housing insecurity in our community.

Q: Do you have a bucket list and if so, what is on it?
A: I have always been a bit of a shark nerd. So, one item toward the top of my bucket list is to dive with great white sharks. My wife is not yet convinced this is a great idea. There are many places around the country and world that I would also like to visit. Travel will always be high on my list.

Q: Do you live life by any certain motto or philosophy?
A: Be kind whenever possible and it is always possible.
