Q: What is your title at the Gene B. Glick Company?

A: I am the property manager at Cambridge Square North Apartments in Indianapolis.

Q: How long have you been with the company?
A: I started with Glick in 1997 and worked for the company through 2013. I took a year off and then returned to the company in 2014. I’ve been here ever since.

Q: Have you had any other positions with the company?
A: Yes. I previously served in maintenance technician and maintenance supervisor roles.

Q: How did you make your way into this industry?
A: A friend of mine who worked for Glick kept telling me how much I would love the company. I was a landscape supervisor at the time. During my first interview with Glick, the supervisor asked me what I knew about maintenance. I told him that I would be "the best light bulb-changer" he ever hired. He said he liked my attitude and hired me on the spot. I started the next day.

Q: What do you do in your role?
A: I am responsible for the overall planning of the property, such as budgeting, marketing, financial planning, team development and a lot of the administrative work. I think most other managers would agree that we are all accountants, problem solvers, therapists, counselors, inspectors and detectives as well. People would be surprised by the many hats property managers have to wear. We have to be flexible and adapt to daily changes and challenges.

Q: Why is your role/the work you do at Glick important?
A: We all have a chance to be a difference-maker. It’s rewarding and important that we continue to provide quality affordable housing. It’s awesome when we see people who have faced unfortunate life situations sign leases and move in to our properties.

Q: What has surprised you the most about working at Glick?
A: In the beginning, I was surprised by how much I fell in love with the property and the people who lived there. I’ve also been surprised by the endless opportunity at this company if you work hard and embrace change. The culture at Glick has been amazing and rewarding. And Glick’s corporate social responsibility has enabled me to be a part of something so much larger than myself.

Q: What has kept you here?
A: There have been many things that have kept me at Glick. First, I would say my mentors, leaders and the support that I have received throughout the years. Second, I would say the opportunities to learn, grow and take on different challenges at various properties.

Q: Where are you from?
A: I’m originally from Sheridan, Indiana, and I grew up in Cicero, Indiana. I now live in Indianapolis.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: In my free time, I love to camp, hike and swim. Basically anything nature-related is where you can find me when I am not working. Luckily for me, I have an 11-year-old who is full of energy and likes to be outside too.

Q: What might surprise Glick team members about you?
A: I love jumping out of perfectly functional airplanes. I love anything with heights and speed. You can say that I am an adrenalin junkie.

Q: If you won the lottery and didn’t have to worry about money, how would you fill your time (e.g., dream job, hobbies, causes)?
A: First, I would open an interactive camp in Indiana that is LGBT-friendly. There is nothing like it in the state of Indiana. I would create a safe place where family dynamics is not a concern. There would be hiking, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, four-wheeling and so many other fun things that cannot be found in the city. Then, I would make sure that the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program would be around for years to come and that there would be funding to find cures for multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s. Lastly, I would build tiny house villages to house as many young adults as possible that are coming out of foster care and have nowhere to go.

Q: If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?
A: I would travel state-to-state here in the U.S. and see all the amazing and beautiful places in our own country.

Q: Do you live life by any certain motto or philosophy?
A: One philosophy I live by is: “Always try to leave people and places better than you find them.” My motto is a James Dean quote: “Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today.”
