VTO with Heart – Men's Warming Shelter

At the Gene B. Glick Company, we are committed to strengthening the quality of life and giving back to the communities we call home. As part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, we encourage our team members to give back to their communities through volunteerism and empower them to do so through our paid volunteer time off (VTO) program. Our ‘VTO with Heart’ series highlights Glick team members using their VTO to volunteer with organizations close to their hearts.

Cassandra Brown recently volunteered for the Men's Warming Shelter in Bedford, IN with her son. The shelter's mission is to connect homeless men with services and resources by offering them a safe place to sleep. The shelter also offers men a place to get food and clothing and a place to shower or do their laundry. While volunteering, Cassandra helped sign people in on the sign-in sheet, straightened up and stocked the food area, served food and helped clean up.

Cassandra chose to volunteer at the Men's Warming Shelter because it was close to home, and she heard great things about the shelter. She wanted to be a part of helping someone get food or essentials that they need.

After her time volunteering with the Men's Warming Shelter, we caught up with Cassandra to learn more about how volunteering is part of her life.

How Does Volunteering Impact Your Life?

"I like volunteering because I know that I am helping someone that needs a helping hand, or an ear to listen when someone just wants to be heard. I have learned that in a homeless situation there are usually things that happen to cause this. Even though the stories of these men’s lives are sad, they are very interesting as well."

What Does Glick’s VTO Mean to You?

"Glick’s VTO is an amazing perk. A lot of people are unable to volunteer due to their busy life schedules outside of work. With the VTO, we can volunteer our time during the workday."

Are There Other Organizations That You Work with That You Want Others to Know About?

"I have helped in the past with ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at Christmas time. I did only use 4 hours of my VTO at the warming shelter so I think I will use the other 4 hours to help hand out gifts to the kids around the holiday season."
