VTO with Heart – Samaritan's Purse

At the Gene B. Glick Company, we are committed to strengthening the quality of life and giving back to the communities we call home. As part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, we encourage our team members to give back to their communities through volunteerism and empower them to do so through our paid volunteer time off (VTO) program. Our ‘VTO with Heart’ series highlights Glick team members using their VTO to volunteer with organizations close to their hearts.

Kara Miller recently volunteered with Samaratian's Purse alongside her husband, Wayne, where they participated in Operation Christmas Child. Through this project, Samaritan’s Purse partners with local churches to collect and deliver shoeboxes filled with gifts to children in need during the holidays.

Kara chose to volunteer for Operation Christmas Child, because her family participated in the project as her children were growing up. They made shoeboxes to send to children in other countries that are affected by war, poverty, natural disasters, famine and disease. "I thought it would be a great opportunity to give back and to see what happens to the shoebox once it reaches the donation center."

During their time participating in Operation Christmas Child, Kara and her husband inspected and packed shoeboxes that would be shipped out to children in the Congo. The facility where they worked out of had sent out over 2 million boxes this past holiday season. "It was amazing to see how many boxes were processed each day," Kara said.

After her time volunteering with Samaritan's Purse, we caught up with Kara to learn more about how volunteering is part of her life.

How Does Volunteering Impact Your Life?

"I feel so blessed. Being able to give back, even just a little, in the community where we live is extremely rewarding. Volunteering helps build a sense of community and purpose."

What Does Glick’s VTO Mean to You?

"I am proud to work for an organization that values civil responsibility and encourages their team to give back each year. It is a great benefit and I use my hours each year and encourage my team to use theirs.
