At the Gene B. Glick Company, we are committed to strengthening the quality of life and giving back to the communities we call home. As part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, we encourage our team members to give back to their communities through volunteerism and empower them to do so through our paid volunteer time off (VTO) program. Our ‘VTO with Heart’ series highlights Glick team members using their VTO to volunteer with organizations close to their hearts.

One of our property managers, Sandy Aviles-Barrientos, recently dedicated her free time to supporting her community’s rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Helene in 2024. Sandy volunteered with Samaritan’s Purse, a nondenominational organization providing aid to people who need it around the world. Since the 1970s, Samaritan’s Purse has helped to meet the needs of victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, famine and disease.

Sandy, along with a group of other volunteers, visited a home flooded by the hurricane and spent the day removing all the floors and walls to prepare the house for reconstruction.

“When I arrived, I was overwhelmed by the strength of the community and the people there despite the hardship they encountered,” said Sandy as she reflected on the experience.

The house that Sandy and her cohort of volunteers helped prepare for reconstruction will be dedicated to a family that was heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene.

We had the opportunity to catch up with Sandy after her day of volunteering and asked a few questions about her experience:

“The volunteers that were there amazed me with their compassion and dedication. It's insanely overwhelming to see how people from various walks of life, coming in from different places, despite their race, religion, or gender, have united for one noble cause.”
