VTO with Heart: Serving the Community Alliance of the Far Eastside (CAFE)

Aug 31, 2026

At the Gene B. Glick Company, we are committed to enhancing quality of life for our neighbors and giving back to the communities we call home. As part of that commitment, we encourage our team members to make a difference through volunteerism and empower them to do so through our paid volunteer time off (VTO) program. Our ‘VTO with Heart’ series highlights Glick team members using their VTO to volunteer with organizations close to their hearts.

Julie Doss & Team at CAFE in Indianapolis

A group of Glick Operations Managers and Directors, along with the Vice President of Operations, spent their Volunteer Time Off (VTO) at Community Alliance of the Far Eastside (CAFE) in Indianapolis. This nonprofit organization connects Far Eastside residents with helpful resources and programs, such as meals and job training, to strengthen quality of life. Additionally, CAFE partners with local businesses and community leaders to support the neighborhood’s evolving needs.

In the morning, the team helped receive, organize, and assemble hundreds of fresh produce boxes that would be distributed directly to community members later that day. After about two hours of sorting and assembling, the Glick team moved the product outdoors to prepare to hand-deliver food boxes to arriving guests. During CAFE's food drives, it’s not uncommon to see more than 100 vehicles lined up to receive food boxes for their families – and today was no different. Glick volunteers worked side by side in the afternoon to load food directly into vehicles. The CAFE Operations Team has found that this approach supports smooth delivery of essential food items for all attendees in need.

We spoke with Julie Doss, Director of Training and Customer Service, who reflected on the experience.

Why did your team choose to volunteer with CAFE?

“We wanted to use our VTO together and support an organization making a difference on Indianapolis' Far Eastside, a community that has long been important to the Glick family.”

How does volunteering influence your life?

“Volunteering grounds me and gives me perspective. It reminds me that my time and skills can make a difference beyond my day-to-day responsibilities. It also helps me stay connected to my community, learn from different experiences, and bring a stronger sense of purpose to how I show up personally and professionally.”

What does Glick’s Volunteer Time Off benefit mean to you?

“VTO gives me an opportunity to support local communities with the encouragement of the organization behind me. Seeing Glick team members regularly volunteer and support charitable initiatives makes community involvement feel like a shared part of our culture.”

Which other meaningful causes have you supported through volunteerism?

“I have volunteered during TeenWorks mock interview day, where students could practice professional communication skills. Being able to support teens… was especially meaningful, as it reinforced how small moments of guidance and encouragement can have a lasting impact on someone’s career journey.”

A Legacy of Giving
